What are our methods?

We employ various methods, tools and techniques in order to cater to the unique needs of each individual student.

Orton Gillingham

This is the gold standard approach to literacy instruction for students with learning differences. It is an approach and not a method or system because the practitioner must design and customize their lessons to each student to ensure they master skills that build on one another and be flexible to adapt their instruction to meet the student where they are at.  OGPs explicitly teach the connections between letters and sounds and put a strong emphasis on understanding the “how” and “why” behind reading.  Once students know consistent rules and patterns, they’re better able to decode words on their own.

Individualized Instruction

We offer our clients specialized lessons customized to their specific learning needs. Students must master one reading skill before moving on to the next.  Practice and repetition of learned skills are then threaded through subsequent lessons so that what they’ve learned goes into long-term memory.

Areas of focus may include:
- Phonological awareness
- Sound to symbol relationships
- Spelling Rules
- Syllable Patterns
- Morphology
- Sight Words
- Penmanship
- Sequencing
- Grammar
- Reading Comprehension
- Writing Composition
- Level-appropriate math

Multisensory

Students will be learning using all four of their learning pathways (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile). For example, students might learn a letter by seeing it, saying its sound, writing the letter with a pen or tracing the letter on a pillow.

One on One Sessions

All our OG lessons will be one-on-one for 1 hour with our fully qualified Orton Gillingham Practitioners. Lessons will be scheduled a minimum of 2 times per week or more depending on the student’s needs. We run our lessons for the duration of the school year (from September until June) but students may join our program at any time during this timeframe if there is availability.
